Why girls’ education

When a girl is educated, empowered and supported, she can lead, thrive, and transform her community.

Education opens doors. It gives a girl the knowledge to make informed choices, the confidence to speak up, and the skills to build a life of her own. When she thrives, her family and community thrive with her.

At Alfijr Girls Empowerment Foundation (AGEF), we begin where girls are held back: access to education, menstrual health, mentorship and a safe place to be heard.

What keeps girls out of school?

When families cannot afford fees, uniforms or supplies, a girl is often the first to stay at home.

1

Poverty

School costs too much

Deep-rooted ideas about what girls should do can limit their chance to learn and to lead.

2

Gender bias

Beliefs that hold her back

Without pads and the right information, a girl’s period can get in the way of her education.

3

No menstrual hygiene products

A period becomes a barrier

When girls are not seen and supported, they begin to doubt their own worth and what they can achieve.

4

Low self-esteem

Doubting what she can become

A girl who does not feel safe getting to school, or being there, finds it hard to stay.

5

Feeling unsafe

On the way and at school

Early marriage and early pregnancy can bring a girl’s schooling to a sudden end.

6

Early marriage

Dreams put on hold

Schools without clean water, toilets or private space make it hard for girls to attend every day.

7

Inadequate facilities

Nowhere to manage a period

Circumstances a girl did not choose should never decide how far she can go.

8

Limited opportunities

Dreams cut short
